Kittens dehydrate fast. Know when diarrhea is normal and when it's an emergency.

Kitten Emergency Warning

Kittens under 8 weeks with diarrhea lasting more than 12-24 hours need immediate veterinary care. They can become critically dehydrated within hours. Do not wait to see if it resolves on its own.

Quick Answer

Kitten diarrhea is most commonly caused by dietary changes, parasites, or stress. Mild, brief diarrhea in an otherwise active kitten over 12 weeks can be monitored at home for 24 hours. Any diarrhea in kittens under 8 weeks, bloody diarrhea, or diarrhea with lethargy/vomiting is urgent.

How to Check for Dehydration

The Skin Tent Test

  1. Gently pinch the skin between the kitten's shoulder blades
  2. Lift the skin up about an inch and release
  3. Hydrated: Skin snaps back instantly
  4. Mildly dehydrated: Skin returns slowly (1-2 seconds)
  5. Severely dehydrated: Skin stays tented — emergency

Other dehydration signs: dry or tacky gums, sunken eyes, lethargy, decreased or absent urination, cool extremities.

Home Care & Remedies

Only for mild diarrhea in kittens over 12 weeks who are otherwise active and eating:

  • Bland diet: Boiled chicken mixed with 1 tsp plain pumpkin puree (not pie filling)
  • Probiotics: FortiFlora or other vet-recommended kitten probiotic
  • Hydration: Ensure fresh water is always available; add water to wet food
  • Small, frequent meals: 4-6 small meals instead of 2-3 larger ones
  • Transition food slowly: If diet change caused it, mix old and new food 75/25, 50/50, 25/75 over 7 days

Never withhold food from kittens under 8 weeks — they can develop life-threatening hypoglycemia.

When to See a Vet

  • • Any diarrhea in kittens under 8 weeks old
  • • Diarrhea lasting more than 24 hours
  • • Blood in stool (bright red or dark/tarry)
  • • Vomiting + diarrhea simultaneously
  • • Kitten stops eating or drinking
  • • Lethargy, weakness, or hiding
  • • Dehydration signs (failed skin tent test)
  • • Worms visible in stool
  • • Fever (ears very hot)

Frequently Asked Questions

Is kitten diarrhea an emergency?
Kitten diarrhea can become an emergency quickly because kittens dehydrate much faster than adult cats. See a vet immediately if diarrhea lasts more than 24 hours in kittens under 8 weeks, contains blood, is accompanied by vomiting or lethargy, or if the kitten stops eating or drinking. A kitten can become critically dehydrated within hours.
What causes diarrhea in kittens?
Common causes include dietary changes (switching food too quickly), intestinal parasites (roundworms, coccidia, giardia), stress from rehoming, bacterial infections, viral infections (panleukopenia), food intolerance, and overfeeding. In bottle-fed kittens, improper formula preparation or using cow's milk instead of kitten formula is a frequent cause.
How do I check if my kitten is dehydrated?
Perform the skin tent test: gently pinch the skin between the shoulder blades and release. In a hydrated kitten, the skin snaps back immediately. If it stays tented or returns slowly, the kitten is dehydrated. Other signs include dry gums, sunken eyes, lethargy, and decreased urination. Any signs of dehydration in a kitten require veterinary attention.
Can I give my kitten Pedialyte for diarrhea?
Unflavored Pedialyte can be given to kittens in small amounts to help with mild dehydration. Offer 2-4ml per hour for a small kitten using a syringe. However, Pedialyte is not a substitute for veterinary care -- it buys time while you get to the vet. Never use flavored varieties as they may contain artificial sweeteners toxic to cats.
What should I feed a kitten with diarrhea?
For weaned kittens, offer small amounts of bland food such as boiled chicken (no seasoning) mixed with plain pumpkin puree (not pie filling). For bottle-fed kittens, continue kitten formula (KMR) but dilute slightly. Do not withhold food from kittens under 8 weeks as they can develop dangerous hypoglycemia. Return to normal food gradually over 3-5 days once stools firm up.
