Kittens dehydrate fast. Know when diarrhea is normal and when it's an emergency.

Kittens under 8 weeks with diarrhea lasting more than 12-24 hours need immediate veterinary care. They can become critically dehydrated within hours. Do not wait to see if it resolves on its own.
Kitten diarrhea is most commonly caused by dietary changes, parasites, or stress. Mild, brief diarrhea in an otherwise active kitten over 12 weeks can be monitored at home for 24 hours. Any diarrhea in kittens under 8 weeks, bloody diarrhea, or diarrhea with lethargy/vomiting is urgent.
| Age | Most Common Causes | Urgency |
|---|---|---|
| 0-4 weeks | Improper formula, bacterial infection, fading kitten syndrome | Emergency |
| 4-8 weeks | Parasites (coccidia, roundworm), weaning transition, viral infection | Urgent |
| 8-16 weeks | Stress from rehoming, diet change, parasites, giardia | Monitor 24h |
| 4-6 months | Food intolerance, dietary indiscretion, parasites | Monitor 24-48h |
| Color | Likely Cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow / mustard | Diet-related, food moving too fast through GI | Monitor |
| Green | Bile, eating grass, rapid transit | Monitor |
| Orange | Liver or gallbladder issue | See vet |
| Bright red streaks | Lower GI bleeding (see blood in stool guide) | Vet same day |
| Black / tarry | Upper GI bleeding | Emergency |
| White / grey | Liver or pancreatic issue | Vet same day |
Other dehydration signs: dry or tacky gums, sunken eyes, lethargy, decreased or absent urination, cool extremities.
Only for mild diarrhea in kittens over 12 weeks who are otherwise active and eating:
Never withhold food from kittens under 8 weeks — they can develop life-threatening hypoglycemia.
Start grooming habits early. Professional groomers help kittens get comfortable with handling, brushing, and nail trims from a young age.
